The 10-Minute Meeting That Changes Everything

Most shop owners hate meetings. And honestly? They’re right to.

The typical shop meeting falls into one of two categories:

  • The boss pulls everyone together to scold and lecture
  • The team uses it as an excuse to complain, whine, and make excuses

Problems never get resolved. Decisions never get made. There’s no follow-up. No wonder you dread them.

But here’s the thing: getting rid of meetings isn’t the answer either.

Without collaboration or accountability, everyone backs into their own corner. They keep their heads down and do their own thing. Work gets done, but your shop becomes a group of individuals instead of a team.

The fix isn’t fewer meetings — it’s the right kind of meeting.

Here’s what we do:

Find your focus.
Know the goal before you call the meeting. One topic. Ten minutes. That’s it.

Have them report their own numbers.
Don’t tell them how they did — ask them. “Steve, what was your target for hours yesterday? How many did you hit?” This builds accountability and shows you who’s paying attention.

Bring it into the light.
When goals are set out loud, in front of the team, people have real incentive to hit them. They see how they stack up. They want to earn the praise.

Follow up.
Good intentions aren’t enough. Tomorrow, they report back. We call it “Return and Report.” It’s the part most shops skip — and it’s the part that matters most.

This meeting takes 10 minutes. It builds a team. It creates accountability without being a drill sergeant.
